These software updates for Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances contain numerous bug fixes and important firmware upgrades. Please carefully review all release notes below prior to updating. Updates provide the complete binary image. The same binary is used for all supported platforms. Additional Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance related software is available for download at the Oracle Technology Network.

Do not attempt to open/unpack/decompress the .zip file inside your Oracle ZFS Appliance system archive. Follow these steps:

  • Download the zip file, (PATCH_ID).zip, to your local system and unzip.
  • A directory named All_Supported_Platforms is created.
  • Inside the directory, the software update file has a .pkg.gz file name extension. Update your appliance system with this file.

The following are the minimum and recommended minimum versions of software supported on each product. If your software is older than the most recent supported version, please review the release notes from this and previous software releases to determine whether you may be affected by any of the issues addressed or can benefit from newly added features. If so, we recommend updating to the most recent supported software version listed for your product. Some products are supported by more than one current software release.

Notes:

  • Minimum version is the oldest version that is currently supported for this product.
  • Recommended minimum version is the oldest version for which critical security and/or data loss bugs will result in the release of an additional micro to address the issue. Fixes for software versions prior to this are on an exception basis.
  • The current version is fully supported and contains all available performance, reliability, and feature enhancements.
  • Clustered products are supported, but not specifically listed.
  • If you have questions about a specific bug fix or feature, your software is older than the minimum listed for your product, or you are uncertain whether an update is supported on your product, please contact us through My Oracle Support.

How long does version upgrade take ?

    1. Mar 18, 2009

      Hi,
To upgrade takes as lon as a reboot of the alliance.
The services is up and running while the upgrade is done on a ZFS snapshot.

If your system is not very busy, it will take about 15 minutes. Note that once the bundle is loaded and added to the system, the system will perform a reboot.

    Hi

It is possible to download a older version we need the 2008.Q4.2.1

newer version are not supporter by VDI 3.0 see the VDI 3.0 release notes

    kind regards

    1. Jun 04, 2009

I'm not sure if it's possible to download the old version.

What I do know is that VDI 3.0.1 is supported with all software versions of the Storage 7000 when used in combination with the VMware Desktop provider. In combination with the VirtualBox desktop provider you are limited to the 2008.Q4.2.1 version and before.

      Kind Regards,
      Stefan

I was going to upgrade to the 2009.Q3.0.0 release since we use iSCSI extensively, but with the minor release 2009.Q3.1.0 coming out, I don't know if I should wait because I can't get any details on the issues which Q3.1.0 fixes, such as CR 6876588, or CR 6876603, etc? I have looked all over Sunsolve and I can't find any reference to these CRs.

      dhneilson:

I can tell you this: I lost 2 iSCSI LUNS when I upgraded to the first Q3 release 2 days after it came out.
I did not heed the "Old stuff will not be migrated warning"

8 LUNS were fine and transitioned to the new iSCSI SAN/multi lun-per-target mode, but 2 showed up at "GUID <unknown>"
and I never was able to get them working. Even rolling back to a pre-Q3 update snapshot had no effect.

Had I not replicated to a friend's 7110 on a prior firmware in a panic afterwards, I'd have lost data.

Be sure you have good backups of your iSCSI luns before performing the Q3 update. Assume you'll have to reset the device to factory defaults and clear your data off the box. When I did this and tried to import the old pool, it was not recognized (more GUID unknown errors) I had to wipe the ZPOOL as well.

Sun stuff is great, but if you've worked with it for a while, updates sometimes have bugs, warnings are understated, and it often pays to wait. If this had been my software release, id have said "you will need to reset the 7xxx to factory defaults and recreate your ZPOOL after this upgrade" - thats what I had to do in the end.

      My $.02 worth

      Matt

      1. Oct 21, 2009

I'm using the Sun Storage VMware appliance for testing, and I also had a LUN with unknown GUID after the upgrade (I went from Q2.0 to Q3.1).The problem was that a new COMSTAR-compatible LUN was not automatically created, apparently because the ZFS pool version was not supported by COMSTAR and not automatically upgraded to a supported version.

I successfully restored the LUN by manually upgrading the ZFS pool version, then re-creating the LUN. Before upgrading the ZFS pool version, sbdadm gave the error "could not create meta file" when trying to create the LUN.

After this process, the web GUI still had problems (IIRC it was throwing libstmf errors), but it worked correctly after a reboot. After the reboot, the GUID showed up for the LUN, and the LUN was back to normal; I reconnected my test XenServer host to the LUN and all the data (two VHDs for a Windows VM) was intact. Here's the log of what I did... YMMV, please be careful with this stuff!

Note: On the virtual appliance, I could only upgrade to Q3.1 if it was running the default Q2.0 software; if I tried to upgrade to an interim release (I tried Q2.3 and Q2.5), then to Q3.1, it failed 100% of the time during the Q3.1 upgrade. I allocated more RAM to the appliance (I gave it 3GB), which may have helped (it helped with upgrading to interim releases... with the default 1GB, the upgrade always failed).

        matt.weatherford:

I am sorry to reply to you a month after the fact, but when you lost the 2 iSCSI LUNs (while upgrading to the first Q3 release), what storage pool configuration were you using (i.e., RAIDz2, RAID1, etc.)? I am asking this question because I have heard that RAID1 is the more reliable configuration at this time.

Also, have you upgraded to Q3.2 yet? If so, was the migration smooth, or did you lose more LUNs?

Finally, since you initially replied to my post in mid October, have you had any serious issues with running iSCSI on your Sun Unified Storage appliance(s).

        1. Nov 18, 2009

          drneilson:

I was using the RAIDZ2, if memory serves me correctly...

Let me preface this with the statment that Im basically an idiot....
but Im inclined to believe that the zpool upgrade had
more to do with the LUN loss (see above post) than a pool failure of some kind.

After this Q2->Q3 upgrade debacle, and getting all my luns off of the 7110,
I wiped it to factory defaults and started over. I am now using the mirrored config and losing disk space in favor
of performance. The unit has been working properly so far and I am now trusting it with many iSCSI LUNS mounted
on my various VMWare ESX 4 servers again. BTW: Use write caching for your iSCSI luns or your performance will stink, even
with the mirrored pool configuration.... on second thought, each person should read up on the downside of write caching and decide for themselves - but check out the analytics with and without it (you can dynamically enable/disable it on the fly per LUN) - big diff on my ESX 4 iscsi vm speed ....)

iSCSI seems stable - and was even stable on Q2 release - just that upgrade Q2->Q3 caused me grief.

Using analytics, with a GigE backbone and 1x gigE nic on Sun Fire x4170 and 4x LACP-aggregated gigE's on the 7110,
(I know, single host, so LCAP AGGR does nothing in this case) I am seeing peaks of 87M per second using Analytics/ iSCSI bytes per second broken down by client

Im not even sure if that is good or bad... just hope it is useful to someone.

We are using VMware Simulator of 7410 for our testing purpose as we can;t do the dev & test on the Real 7410s. But we faced the same problem when upgrading the Simulator.
The first case was, the Simulator Contained Q2.5.0 and when we tried to upgrade with Q3.1.0, it failed many times.
The second case was, the simulator was not applied with any Upgrades and directly the Q3.1.0 was applied. That succeeded.

But, we were not able to create a single iSCSI Disk by any means (BUI/GUI). It always showed the libstmf error.

The only way i found was to manually create a Zpool in the Simulator and then use Comstar Stack commands to creat ZFS files and iSCSI volumes on top of it using sbdadm.
The iSCSI LUNS still didn't show the GUID yet. I had to restart akd (svcadm restart akd:default) to get that reflected (A reboot would also do).

The story was same with Virtual Disk Simulator also.

But, its high time that with such a major release Q3.1, the Sun Team should immediately fix the bugs with the Simulator Images. Because in certain environments, the concerned cannot dev&test on real 7410 systems. The Simulator is the only means available to them.

JUST NOW I NOTICED THAT A LINK HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE "PREVIOUS RELEASES" section of this page in the top. The latest release is "2009.Q2.5.1 RELEASED ON 10/21/2009" . I don;t know why the latest release came in the previous release section.

I have to download and test it and see if this works with the Q3.1. release in the simulator.

    Hi,

Was somebody able to install the 2009.Q3.2.0 version on the emulator?

I tried to upgrade a VMware appliance running Q3.1 to Q3.2 and it failed. It just powered off partway through the upgrade. It's probably the same as with previous releases (have to upgrade from Q2.0).

Does anyone know if it is possible to assign an iSCSI Target to more than one network interface? I have tried it from both the BUI and command line, and the system will not let me select or enter more than one interface.

My intent is to set up two network interfaces (each connected to a different switch and subnet) to handle iSCSI traffic from the LUNs on my 7210 appliance to my virtual machines. This would give me both redundancy in case a switch failed as well as split the network traffic load over two interfaces.

Under the 2.5 release I was partially able to split the iSCSI traffic over two links/switches with the exception that traffic either went over one link or the other, never both. But I don't see how iSCSI traffic can be split over two network interfaces with 3.2. Does anyone have more insight on this matter?

    Thanks

After upgrading my VMware Simulator to 2009.Q3.3.0 I get a "no such chassis" message on the maintenance-system GUI screen, and the OS disk chart and disk info are no longer there.
I also tried it on a fresh install, and the result was the same.
The Simulator upgraded was the 2009.04 release.

    Hi,
We recently switched from ActiveDirectory server on w2k3 to a new one based in w2k8. This new one is
a bit hardened, and require secure binding using SSL or TLS. kclient(1m) in opensolaris does not support anything else than SASL/GSSAPI, and therefore I'm stuck and can't get the osol-servers authenticated anymore.

Does anyone know if there is any plans/work going around this problem. several linux-distro's are using OpenLDAP, and therefore has no problem with this.

This could definitely be a little show-stopper for SS7000, and the fishworks-team should look into it.

Hmm, the RSS Feed seems to be never up2date... would be nice to get informed about new AKs. Have you ever thought about a "Look for new updates" button on the maintenance BUI?

I am hoping someone can help. I have a Sun 7210 Storage Server, and have lost both boot disks so no OS, I have replacements but cannot work out how to re-install the fishworks Solaris OS back onto the box, with no cdrom and no image file or the such. I have downloaded the lastest software for the 7210 but it is a package not a new install. How do I put a fresh install for the 7210 and more so how do I get the actual install media not just a package. Your help would be appreciated. Kindly thankyou.

You will need to contact your support rep and have a site visit to
reload the fishworks os. AFAIKT, there is no way to do it yourself.
I have never seen it done, but I have heard that the support folks have a USB key they use called a "Fishstick" to reload this software...

Hello everybody on the unified storage team,

May I suggest that you include the SHA1 digests on the software update page? I'd really appreciate this.
Here's how you can get the SHA1 digest so that you don't have to look it up:

    openssl dgst -sha1 ak-nas-2010-08-17-1-0-1-1-14-nd.pkg.gz

Of course, you can provide other digest formats (the old MD5 for compatibility and probably the better SHA256 too )

    Many thanks,

    David

    Hi,

I'm trying to download 2010.Q3.1.1 but I think the download links are not valid after the migration to Oracle.
Where can I download this version, I can't seem to find it on the edelivery site....

Keep up the good work, I love my 7210

    Is it possible to download

    2009.Q3.1.0 09/30/2009 ak-2009.09.01.1.0

I have an ZFS 7110 storage with OS version

2009.Q2.2.1; need to upgrade the OS. Is it possible?

    Any advise on this

In the latest update there are only three "issues addressed" yet the number of "known issues" just keeps growing such that there's now 92 "known issues". All of these have to be read and understood thoroughly every single time an update is applied no matter have small it is (and the latest one is so small it's called micro). This is incredibly time consuming and the risk of not fully understanding every single issue can mean there's a risk of data loss/corruption, followed by a withdrawal of support, to make matters worse. How about the release notes make clear if there are any changes or additions to the "known issues" list. And maybe also divide the list into sections such as "issues before upgrade", "issues during upgrade", "minor issues" such as a service needs to be restarted, "major issues" etc. This would be most helpful to administrators. We would also appreciate it if the issues could actually be addressed in a timely fashion as some have been around since the Ark. Whilst I'm grumbling could you take a look at RN022 as the cost of 20% wasted capacity (plus the 25% already unusable due to RAID and spares) is extremely costly and makes the appliance uncompetitive.

I'm a little confused about the version numbers. My 7320 came in last week with 2011.04.24.4.1,1-1.26. Any rationale as to why the release number isn't the prefix (mine, I guess, would be 2011.1.4.1)?

  16. Aug 23, 2013

Oracle now requires an active support contract to access any downloads. Considering the age of many Sun 7000 series, not everyone has a support contract anymore. I have a 7210 that we purchased in 2008.

Can you please make the firmware available directly?

Doesn't the firmware have software that falls under the open source or GPL license?

Hi this is more of a question than a comment but I have an S7120 that is having SSH issues.

How does one upload a new openssh package to the S7120?

I'm updating the version but haven't seen where a new SSH is part of the new package versions.

I can't use sftp/ssh to login or backup to devices that require SFTP.
